In this video, Public Watchdogs’ Nina Babiarz asks the California Coastal Commission to enforce its Coastal Development Permits.
The first thing you have to understand is that standing anywhere near the walls of one of these canisters will give you a lethal radiation dose in a matter of seconds. Even the robotic inspection cameras, which are designed to transmit photographs and video are destroyed quickly by the intense radiation. Watch the video here. Scroll down for a summary.

San Diego County’s biggest problem is 3.6 million pounds of lethally radioactive nuclear waste that is stranded at the site of the failed San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. Get the video. Nina explains that every canister has been damaged during the storage process. Edison has tried to conceal the damages from the public by using an incorrect, inaccurate technique for evaluating the depth of the gouges in every canister.
She explains that the Coastal Commission has issued two “Conditional Development Permits” or “CDPs.” The first permit was for decommissioning San Onofre, and the second permit was for demolition of the failed nuclear power plant. Each of the permits required an “independent third party review.” Moreover, each report noted that Edison was using the WRONG method to calculate the extent of the damages to the canisters. specifically recommended that Edison stop using its “inaccurate and incorrect calculation method, and to only use a calculation method that is inaccurate.”
