AB 305 is the very first item on the Committee on Natural Resources Hearing Agenda at 2:30pm Monday, April 21 (don’t be late to this virtual meeting!)

California’s nuclear industry has influenced a legislative change that provides an “exemption” to that allows “Small Modular Reactors” or “SMRs” to be built across our state, and the vote is taking place on Monday, April 21, 2025.  We are asking the public to attend this meeting virtually to put pressure on California Assembly Members by letting them know that the public is watching this vote!

WHO: Chair of the Natural Resources Committee, Arambula, and Assembly members Dixon and Hoover as co-authors.

WHAT: This new exemption will allow “small” nuclear reactors to cover the State of California

WHEN:  2:30 PM, Monday, April 21

WHERE: Attend virtually at this hyperlink.

State Capitol Building, Room #437

WHY AB 305 IS “ALL WRONG”

1) AB 305 overturns existing law. AB 305 subverts a 49-year old legal ban on building nuclear power plants in California. Under current law, no nuclear power plants can be built until there is a solution to the problem of where to bury the deadly nuclear waste.

2) The exemption is a “sneak attack.” AB 305 is a sneak attack on the public by highly paid lobbyists and political hacks. It should have been vetted by the California Assembly’s Committee on Utilities and Energy, which is is the ONLY committee in California with jurisdiction over nuclear. Instead, it was rammed through an obscure committee whose jurisdiction is “land use.”

3) The Committee vote is Monday at 2:30.

It was flown swiftly under the radar and into a vote with zero vetting by the public or the Assembly.

4) There were NO public hearings. AB 305 is the first item on a long agenda. This means that it is likely that a vote will be taken immediately and without any discussions, debate, or public input as soon as the meeting starts at 2:30pm.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU CALL:

First, call Arambula, Hoover, or Dixon before the hearing and say”No on AB-305.”

  • Say NO today on NO More nuclear plants in CA
  • Radioactive nuclear waste is deadly for tens of thousands of years
  • We can’t be making more nuclear waste.
