Why San Onofre is a likely target for an Iranian counter-attack

On March 11, 2026, the FBI warned about possible drone attacks against California targets.  The FBI warning is “restricted,” and therefore non-public.  However, if the Iranian drone threat is legitimate, it is our contention that the Failed San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) may be a priority target for the following reasons:

1)  Trump is targeting Iran’s power plants and nuclear sites.
Trump has announced plans to bomb Iran’s power plants including “nuclear facilities.”  Iran has promised to respond with an “eye for an eye.”
2)  Bombing power plants is a war crime under the Geneva Convention’s Rules of War.
Bombing electric utilties and civilian water supplies is a war crime under  Article 54  and Article 56 of the Geneva Convention’s Rules of War.  Article 56 specifically mentions nuclear facilities.
3)  Trump has an established record of committing war crimes in Iran.
However,  it is unclear whether or not Trump is targeting Iran’s only nuclear power plant, Bushehr, which is located 26 nautical miles north of the Straits of Hormuz (Get Map).  We do know that Trump intends to attack utilities.  We also know that those attacks are criminal under the Rules of War.  Click here for our analysis.
4)  Iran may argue that San Onofre is a legitimate military target.
San Onofe is located on Camp Pendleton, a military base.  This makes San Onofre a questionably legitimate target under the Rules of War.  “Questionable” because the rules of war prohibit attacks on utility infrastructure.  “Legitimate” because it is located on a military base.

5) Iran has promised to retaliate with an “eye for an eye.”
The phrase “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” originated with Law 195 from the Code of Hamurabi.  The Hamarabi Code predates the Old Testament by a thousand years, although the phrase is repeated often in the Old Testament in Exodus 21:23-25Leviticus 24:19-20, and Deuteronomy 19:21.
All of this begs the question:  Is Trump keeping us safe, or paving the way to a nuclear disaster on U.S. soil?
