The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has received an Event Report involving the improper handling of hazardous waste material at the failed San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). | ![]() |
SONGS was shuttered in 2013 after it blew hazardous radioactive steam into the atmosphere from a defective Replacement Steam Generator (RSG).
The California Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) noted that in violation of the SONGS’ permit, and California laws,* SONGS operators, Southern California Edison, has drilled holes into a concrete slab designed to protect hazardous waste on November 5, 2025. .
The report states that because the holes only partially penetrate the concrete, that the “secondary containment remains functional.” Southern California Edison was required to file the report under Federal law, but failed to report the incident publicly on its web sites. Get the report.
